Wolfsburg – a major city that is big on culture

Wolfsburg is a city bursting with diverse cultural and leisure facilities. Not only is there the Kunstmuseum (art museum), Planetarium, BadeLand (a poolscape), Stadtbibliothek (city library) or the Italienisches Kulturinstitut (Italian Culture Institute), but also and above all the Autostadt and the phaeno are attractions which are famous far beyond the city limits.

The town owes its name to Wolfsburg Castle. The venerable building dating from the Weser Renaissance with its baroque garden today houses, inter alia, the art collection of the Städtische Galerie (Municipal Gallery) , the Heimatmuseum (local heritage museum) and the Museum für Stadtgeschichte ab 1938 (Museum for City History from 1938).

It goes without saying that the Volkswagen automobile factory, the foundation stone for which was laid in 1938, is as closely associated with the town as the oval rear window is to the first VW Beetle.

Today, the site of the former hut camp houses a modern and pulsating major city with clear architectural form and a great deal of green space for living and relaxation.
