Welcome to Torfhaus. At an altitude of 820 metres above sea level, the highest settlement in the Harz Mountains. Part of the mountain town of Altenau, Torfhaus is located in the Harz Mountains National Park, right in the middle of extensive high-moor bogs boasting thick layers of peat of up to six metres in depth. Once home to peat-cutters – and indeed in December 1777 also to Goethe prior to his climbing Mount Brocken – the location is today an ideal hiking and skiing centre.

In Germany's most northern minor mountain range you will find wildly magical "forestscapes" and a rich cultural heritage going back 1,000 years. On a clear day, Torfhaus offers a breathtaking view of the Brocken massif (1.142m above sea level), which is only 5.5 km away as the crow flies.
In the Harz Mountains National Park, experience a landscape en route to a wilderness which is increasingly becoming a new "old" home to the lynx.
