Mardorf is the in meeting place for surfers and sailors. Canoes and sailing boats (for those with their A-licences for sailing) can be rented from the youth hostel, while in winter the boats are exchanged for ice skates: and ice-sailing championships are held here on ice that is up to 50 cm thick.
The beautiful sandy beach with the gently sloping lake bottom is especially attractive for families with children - here you will find neither dangerous currents nor suddenly plunging depths. The water, virtually nowhere reaching a depth of more two metres, warms up very quickly. Two tennis courts close to the youth hostel offer welcome diversion for those who like racket sports, while hiking and cycle tours on signposted routes also provide excellent exercise.
Boot trips take visitors to Steinhude, to the Wilhelmstein fort or on a tour of the lake itself. And away from the water's edge and the beach life there are countless ways of enjoying the natural countryside, for example on a cycling tour to Meerbruch, a bird sanctuary of international importance.
