Much of the area surrounding Mardorf was declared a nature reserve many years ago. As a result, the transition areas between the lake and the moorland and between the moorland and the forest, as well as the moor itself have become a gigantic paradise for birds. Virtually all species of waterbirds can still be found here.
Within the Youth Hostel Association, our youth hostel is recognised as a centre for environmental studies. We can therefore also accept bookings for organised environmental-education project weeks and programmes.
Apart from the sporting and recuperative opportunities offered by Mardorf, there are also the heritage museum which was opened in 1991 and the Christus Chapel - the half-timbered house built in 1721 considered to be the oldest building in Mardorf - both of which are well worth a visit. Another impressive witness of the past is the "Goliath Stone". The erratic boulder originating from the Ice Age is located in "Pferdeweg" at the exit to the village in the direction of Neustadt.
Hanover, the capital of Lower Saxony and only 45 kilometres away, is worth at least one full day's excursion. Here you will find the town-centre lake Maschsee, trade fairs, museums, an adventure zoo and a host of sporting, musical and other cultural big-city events.
Other attractive excursion destinations are the dinosaur park in Münchehagen, the peat museum in Neustadt and the nearby golf course which is open to the general public.
