Between forest and heath, between moorland and lake:
Mardorf at the very heart of Lake Steinhuder Nature Reserve

Surfing, sailing, beach enjoyment: Mardorf is located on Lake Steinhuder, the biggest inland lake on the North German Plain. This Lower Saxony Eldorado for fans of water sports also attracts families with children, thanks to its beaches of white sand with gently shelving and safe lake bottom.

However, the cosy little village of Mardorf offers not only wonderful opportunities for bathing and water sports. Magnificent old farmsteads surrounded by forest, moorland and heath look back on a long and eventful history. And long-established families are proud of what they have achieved over the generations.

Beautiful sandy beaches, bobbing sailing boats, surfers skimming over the water. Without being a museum village, Mardorf is a paradise for fans of water sports and those wishing to get close to nature. Opening the area up to tourist traffic has been a complete success - in spite of, or indeed perhaps because of its avoidance of towering hotel blocks.
