Lüneburg: The trendy hanseatic and university city

Lüneburg is one of the most beautiful undamaged medieval towns in North Germany. Lovingly restored gabled houses, huge merchant houses and unique brick architecture bear witness to the affluence acquired by the town's patricians and salt traders.

History really comes to life at the Stintmarkt: for centuries, the Alter Kran (old crane), an engineering masterpiece, manoeuvred the heaviest of loads, especially the precious salt. And the Rathaus (Town Hall), with its Gerichtslaube (arcaded court house) dating from the year 1330, is no less impressive, and was continuously extended as a result of the prosperous times until it was finally given the baroque façade which you see today.

However, the former hanseatic city does not just bask in the glory of former times. The old façades of this young university town also offer a fascinating backdrop to fashionable bars and pubs and old-fashioned cafés. A great place to shop and to hang out.
