Leisure also has many faces in Hanover and from the youth hostel you are within easy reach of most of them. For example, the rock and pop concerts in the AWD-Arena or on the park stage, the annual Maschsee Festival in the first weeks of August and the world-famous Hanover Schützenfest fair. Drama and music enthusiasts are well served by more than twenty theatres, where many famous artists make guest appearances.
The Royal Herrenhausen Gardens are the venue for a host of unusual events. From May to September, a programme of minor and major festivals is staged against the background of latebaroque horticultural art: Baroque firework displays to music by Handel, the "International Fireworks Competitions", and not least plays and ballet in the hedge theatre which was created at the end of the 17th century.
Hanover museums, too, offer stunning variety: a collection of ancient historical exhibits, the Landesgalerie and ethnology and natural history departments are to be found in the Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum, while the History Museum illustrates the city’s great past. The Kestner Museum displays Egyptian art, and the Sprengel Museum modern art. And it goes without saying that the Wilhelm-Busch-Museum houses social criticism and original editions of Max und Moritz.
And not forgetting: those who wish to see new faces for a change can wander around the am Hohen Ufer flea market on a Saturday; or visit Hanover’s Adventure Zoo (Erlebniszoo).
