Otters, heath and moor ...

Hankensbüttel is famous far and wide not least on account of its OTTER CENTRE. The non-profit-making organisation Aktion Fischotterschutz (Otter Protection Campaign) has been running the Natur- und Umweltbildungszentrum (Nature and Environmental Education Centre) since 1988. The centre is the first of its kind in Europe and offers an exciting programme of experiencing nature at first hand, as well as guided tours for various target groups and interested parties.

Alongside the otter centre there is a development and research project under way for the revitalisation of the river Ise, one of the biggest nature-conservation projects in the agricultural landscape. However, the areas surrounding Hankensbüttel also boast a host of interesting excursion destinations for you to explore.

The Schulmuseum (School Museum) in Steinhorst offers graphic insights into historic everyday school routine, while in the Wulff hunting museum in Oerrel visitors can get close to a number of wild (stuffed) animals. On a guided hike through heath and moor you can learn a lot about the country and its people and the Hösseringen open-air museum invites you to take a look at times and places long gone.
