The city of the legendary Pied Piper of Hamelin

Hamelin on the river Weser, the city which gave birth to the legend of the Pied Piper, is at the centre of the beautiful Weserbergland region (Weser Hill Country) and an international tourist destination. We are all familiar with the world-famous legend of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, who in 1284 first freed the city from a plague of rats and then ran away with 130 children who were never seen again.

The city of the Weser Renaissance
As famous as the colourfully dressed musician was – on his own he was hardly enough to make Hamelin into a sight worth seeing. In the historical old part of the town, which has been wonderfully restored to its former glory, you can admire countless magnificent buildings from the era of the Weser Renaissance: for example the Rattenfängerhaus (Pied Piper House), the Dempterhaus, the Leisthaus and the Hochzeitshaus (Wedding House), all of which were built around 1600. The splendid overall picture of the historical streets is rounded off with memorable half-timbered buildings, two city towers and a city wall dating from the Middle Ages and not least the St. Bonifatius minster, which is located directly on the river Weser and represents the nucleus of Hamelin.
