Goslar: Gateway to the Harz Mountains

One thousand years old and still alive and kicking:
The old Kaiserstadt (Imperial City) with its narrow, cobblestone alleyways, in which every house has its own story to tell, pulses with life. With its ancient culture and modern art, Goslar cannot fail to impress. It is a city worth seeing and an experience not to miss.

The heart of the old town, which dates from the Middle Ages, boasts the imposing imperial palace and the Rammelsberg silver mine, which was closed down after being in operation for no less than one thousand years. Both of these sights are on the "UNESCO World Heritage List".

In the old town, you will discover the old Frankenberg Bergmannssiedlung (miners' settlement) with the "Kleines heiliges Kreuz" (little holy cross) and in the centre an impressive marketplace with a Gothic Rathaus (town hall), Glockenspiel (chimes) and the magnificent "Kaiserworth" guildhall.

The many narrow cobbled alleyways are unique and lined with houses, each of which has a history of its own.

Because of its 47 churches and chapels featuring so many towers and spires, the city was once known as "Northern Rome". The unique silhouette generated by the towers and the five large parish churches is still impressive today.

Many of the buildings are listed in the historic register. But Goslar is no stuffy museum, but a city full of life – the right place for strolling through town, for checking out the history, for just passing the time of day and not least, it is the ideal centre for those wishing to visit the Harz Mountains.
