The university town with the most-kissed girl

Welcome to the city with many faces: Göttingen is a university town, a student town, the town of Gauss, of the Grimm brothers and of Lichtenberg. But Göttingen is also a festival town, a green town in charming surroundings and not least, a town on the Märchenstraße (the fairy-tale road).

The town is especially characterised by the Georgia Augusta University, which was founded in 1736/37. Today, no less than 30,000 students study there. The university and the famous personalities who have studied, taught or worked there have given Göttingen worldwide fame and reputation. Indeed, Georgia Augusta has produced more than forty Nobel Prize winners.

The world is equally familiar with Göttingen's famous landmark: the Gänseliesel, or "the most-kissed girl in the world". She can be found in front of the historic town hall (Rathaus). According to an old custom, all students must kiss Gänseliesel after obtaining their doctor's degree.
